Ingredients 101: Understanding Hydrosol
We’ve all been there. You grab a beauty product, turn the label over to read what’s in it, and suddenly realize “okay, I have no IDEA what the hell I am about to put on my face.” You read a few reviews, pray the product will work for you, and head home to try it out. There’s no fun in feeling uncertain at the beauty counter, at YELLE we provide you with information about key ingredients in our formulas so you understand what makes our products GREAT and you can make an informed purchase. This week we are discussing hydrosols. Hydrosol waters are specifically created to perform a benefit to the skin and we love them as a plant-based alternative that produces subtle results over time. Keep reading to learn more.
What is a hydrosol?
Hydrosols are distillates of oil from plants. They are a by-product derived from plants when steam is passed over them. Hydrosols are aromatic and have antiseptic and soothing properties. They are a mixture of water, plant and oil. In preparing a hydrosol, the plant from which the oil will be extracted is first prepared. It is then brought into a still where steam is passed over it, and over time, the oil content of the plant is distilled from it, the oil is stored, and the remnant is kept aside. The mixture of oil and water and plant is stored as the hydrosol.
Benefits of hydrosols/Skin Types and other useful hydrosols
Hydrosols are used in a variety of skin care formulations. They can be found in ointments or balms created to manage pain, cleansers, and toners. Different hydrosol formulations have been created over time to help address different skin conditions. Chamomile hydrosols are formulated to treat irritated skin and rose geranium hydrosol to address mature skin are two examples.
Where can I find it at YELLE?
At YELLE we incorporate a cucumber hydrosol into our YELLE ADREAM eye cream. The refreshing cucumber hydrosol along with peptides and other beneficial ingredients help to soothe and improve the appearance of tired eyes. Our cucumber hydrosol as with all of the products in our YELLE collection is fragrance free. Due to its gentleness and the pH that is close to the natural pH of the skin, hydrosols can be applied directly to the skin without altering the pH or causing any major alterations to the skin.
Relax
What is beauty without an evening of rest and sleeping soundly? Treat your under-eye area to a deep treatment. Apply a small amount of our Awakening Toner to the undereye area followed by a small amount of peptide boosting serum. Lastly, apply ADREAM eye cream carefully to the eye area. Spray a lite hydrosol mist onto your pillow or bedsheet and get ready for a good night’s rest.
