Exfoliating 101
Exfoliation is an essential part of an individual’s skincare routine. It’s the part that does the heavy lifting of removing dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. Once all of those dead skin cells are out of the way, skin care products can do a better job of penetrating the outermost layer of your skin and work better for you. That usually means an enhanced and more resilient glow. Want to learn more about exfoliating and why itis an important part of your skin care routine? Keep reading to find out.
The Best Exfoliation
There are several different types of exfoliation. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, cleansing brushes, exfoliating beads, and enzymes and more. Even using a washcloth to wash your face can provide mild exfoliation. So, exfoliation really is everywhere. So, which type of exfoliation is best for your specific skin type? For sensitive skin a gentle enzyme or silicone brush used in conjunction with a gentle cleanser 1-2 per week may provide sufficient exfoliation with minimal irritation to the skin. The YELLE Awakening Milk & Honey Cleanser with papaya enzyme can act as a helpful exfoliant to break down dead skin cells when left on the skin for 3-5 minutes. Individuals with dry or textural concerns might consider using an exfoliating scrub, applied with their hands, and worked into the skin with gentle circular motions to slough away dead skin. Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are also appropriate for these skin types. Chemical exfoliants come formulated with a wide variety of acids. They are suitable for normal skin types and may be formulated for even the most sensitive skin types. When it comes to chemical peels it is important to consult a skincare professional to ensure you are using a peel that is compatible with your skin type.
What About Body Exfoliation?
It’s a perfectly good idea to exfoliate your body. Just remember that loofahs, porous body brushes, and body cloths are breeding grounds for bacteria. These body exfoliating tools should be replaced often and dried between usage.
How Do I Know if I am Over Exfoliating?
Your skin will definitely let you know if you are over exfoliating. Signs of over exfoliation might be red, raw, peeling, burning, and tingling skin that does not seem to improve over time. If undergoing medical treatment these could also be reasonable side effects of treatment so it is important to speak with your medical provider about your symptoms. It is also important to know that the skin around the nose, chin, mouth, eyes, and the cheeks in some individuals are particularly sensitive areas. They are more prone to irritation than other areas like the forehead and sides of the face. Be careful not to scrub those areas to harshly and be mindful of these areas when applying chemical peels on those areas. Leaving them on the skin to long may cause serous irritation to the skin.
How often should I exfoliate
Use your exfoliating products as directed but, also pay attention to your skin. You may have to adjust your usage of certain over the counter products to allow your skin a chance to get acclimated. Don’t be afraid to adjust your usage based on the condition of the skin. Your skin may need less in the beginning but over time will gradually build up to the recommendations.
